Sufferers can be young children, through to teens and adults. Self harm covers a whole range of dilemmas from cutting oneself with a sharp implement to solvent abuse, alcohol, drugs, and smoking and anything that does actual physical harm to the body.

Usually at the core of the situation is unexpressed emotions. Emotions buried so deep the person does'nt know how to verbalise them, which for many, helps them to gain some sort of inner calm or a better understanding as to why it happens. An addictive personality can also be the root cause for self harm and once again it may be the only way they know how to gain some sort of temporary relief from inner emotional turmoil. During therapy the counsellor helps the client to express why they are suffering.
